The terms for using MindWell

These terms explain what MindWell is, what it isn't, and the rules for using it. By using the website or the app, you agree to them. Please read them together with our privacy policy.

Effective 10 October 2026Version 1.0Applies to the MindWell website and app

The short version

Support, not treatment

MindWell is an AI companion. It is not a therapist or doctor and cannot diagnose or advise on medication.

Not an emergency service

Nobody watches chats live. If you are in danger, call 112 or Tele-MANAS on 14416.

Use it fairly

Don't use MindWell to harm anyone, break the law, or misuse the AI.

1. About these terms

MindWell is an AI support companion built by a team of students in India as an academic project. In these terms, "we" means the MindWell project team, and "you" means anyone who uses the website or the app.

If you do not agree with these terms, please do not use MindWell.

2. What MindWell is, and what it isn't

MindWell offers supportive conversation, guided coping exercises, a mood tracker, a journal, a safety plan and self-check questionnaires (PHQ-9 and GAD-7).

  • It is not a therapist, doctor, psychiatrist or counsellor, and it is not a medical device.
  • It does not diagnose any condition, provide treatment, or give advice about medication.
  • Self-check scores are a starting point for a conversation with a professional, not a diagnosis.
  • It does not replace professional care. If you are struggling, please also talk to a qualified professional or someone you trust.

3. Emergencies

MindWell is not an emergency service. Nobody monitors conversations in real time, and MindWell cannot call anyone or send help for you. If you or someone else is in immediate danger, call 112. For free mental-health support at any hour, call Tele-MANAS on 14416 or 1-800-891-4416.

MindWell tries to notice signs of risk and show helplines, but these automatic checks can miss things. Do not rely on MindWell to recognise an emergency.

4. Who can use it

MindWell is designed for college students aged 18 and over. If you are under 18, please use it only with the knowledge of a parent, guardian or another adult you trust.

5. Your account

  • You do not need to give your name, email or phone number. Your account is an anonymous access token saved in your browser.
  • Anyone with your device and browser can open your conversations. On a shared device, use the Exit button or a private window.
  • Because we don't know who you are, we cannot recover an account if the token is lost, for example after clearing your browser data. You can download a copy of your data from Settings at any time.

6. Acceptable use

When using MindWell, you agree not to:

  • use it to plan or encourage harm to yourself or anyone else, or to harass, threaten or abuse anyone;
  • share other people's personal details (such as names, phone numbers or addresses) without their permission;
  • upload anything illegal, or content that sexually exploits anyone, including children;
  • try to trick the AI into producing harmful content, or try to get around its safety features;
  • access other people's data, probe or attack the service, or bypass the daily AI limit or other limits;
  • use bots or scripts to send messages or collect content from the service;
  • pretend that MindWell's replies come from a real professional, or present them as medical advice to others.

7. AI replies

  • Replies are written automatically by AI models. They can be wrong, incomplete or not right for your situation. Please use your own judgement, and do not make medical, legal or financial decisions based only on them.
  • To write replies, your messages are processed by third-party AI providers (currently Groq and Google Gemini), as described in the privacy policy.
  • There is a fair daily limit on AI replies. After it, MindWell replies from a simpler built-in engine. Safety checks and helplines keep working.
  • If you add your own Gemini API key in Settings, your use of that key is also covered by Google's terms.

8. Your content

What you write and share stays yours. You allow us to store and process it only to run MindWell for you, keep you safe, and keep the service working, as described in the privacy policy. We do not use your conversations to train AI models, and you can delete everything from Settings at any time.

9. Availability

MindWell is a student project. It may be slow, unavailable, or changed at any time, and it may end when the project ends. If the project ends, we will delete the database and the encryption key, as described in the privacy policy. Please keep your own copy of anything important, using Settings → Download my data.

10. Our liability

MindWell is provided "as is", without any promise that it will be accurate, uninterrupted or suitable for a particular purpose. To the extent allowed by Indian law, the project team is not responsible for any loss or harm that results from using MindWell or relying on its replies. Nothing in these terms limits any right you have under law that cannot be limited.

11. Stopping or limiting use

You can stop using MindWell at any time and delete your data from Settings → Delete everything. We may limit or block access, for example by blocking an account or a network address, if it is used against these terms or in a way that puts the service or other people at risk. Helpline information on the website stays available to everyone.

12. Changes to these terms

If we change these terms, we'll update this page and its effective date. For any significant change, we'll also show a notice in the app. If you keep using MindWell after a change, the new terms apply.

13. Governing law

These terms are governed by the laws of India, and any dispute is subject to the jurisdiction of the courts of India.
